Who were tasked to make disciples of all nations by the LORD Jesus Christ?
In Matthew 28:19-20, it is written, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son & of the Holy Ghost. And teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. And lo, I am with you always even unto the end of the world. Amen!”
The “Good” LORD Jesus Christ was the One speaking here. And the people He was addressing were His 11 apostles-delegates-ambassadors-messengers-sent ones (apostolos in Greek). They are otherwise called as the 11 disciples-learners-pupils (mathetes in Greek) of Jesus (Matthew 28:16).
Judas Iscariot- the 12th apostle, have already killed himself, by hanging. And for that, he is in hell right now (Mark 10:19; Luke 18:20; James 2:11).
In the original context of Matthew 28:19-20, just the 11 disciples of Jesus were the ones tasked-charged-designated-appointed by Him to teach-instruct-disciple (matheteuo in Greek) all the citizens or people of the world, thus converting them to become pupils and learners of Christ.
Only the 11 disciples were commanded by the Lord Jesus Christ to carry out-execute-perform-accomplish-fulfill-bring to reality the work of discipling the whole world for Jesus.
Yet, when the disciples or followers of Jesus proliferated much, as accounted for in the book of Acts, they were first called Christians (Christianos in Greek) in Antioch (Acts 11:26).
A “Christian” literally means “little Christ” or “little Anointed”. In case you do not know, you are anointed (painted-covered-smeared with God the Holy Spirit), if you belong to Christ, if you belong to His church (ekklesia in Greek, meaning you have already responded to His call out of sin, and unto or into the Lord Jesus Christ).
Take for instance, the apostle Paul’s address to the church in Corinth, “What, know ye not that your body is the temple (dwelling place) of the Holy Ghost, which is in you, which ye have of God, & ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price. Therefore, glorify (honor) God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
The presence of the anointing from Jesus, which is God the Holy Spirit, in the life of a believer or Christian is not based on what you feel or not feel, but in the reality of the assurance of Christ’s presence in your life (Hebrews 13:5-6; Matthew 28:20B; Mark 16:20).
Therefore, if you are a Christian (follower of Christ), you are also a disciple tasked to teach-instruct-disciple the whole world for Jesus.
For the harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few (Matthew 9:37). But if you will work in winning souls for Christ, you are being wise (Proverbs 11:30), for Jesus will favorably recompense-repay-compensate you even while here on earth (Proverbs 11:31; John 10:10; Matthew 6:31-33; Psalm 37:4).
The Lord Jesus’ command to His church- the Christians:
1. Get people saved- Have people converted to Christ or make Christians out of people.
2. Have them made truly His disciples/learners/pupils- How do you make true disciples out of Christian converts?
a. By making them learn-observe-obey-keep all the messages-teachings-commands of Jesus, which He laid down in the Bible (Matthew 11:29; John 14:21, 15).
Coming to Jesus: Truly, anyone can come to Jesus as he/she is, even without any request from anyone, yet Christ expects him/her to conform to His character, & not to remain as he/she is (Matthew 11:28; John 6:37B; 1 Peter 1:15-16).
You don’t get good to get God. You get God to get good (2 Corinthians 5:17). – Quoted
Even searching the Bible is useless, if you are not drawn close to Jesus (John 5:39-40).
It is not only the will of the “Good” Lord Jesus Christ for us to be saved from the fires of Hell and the Lake of Fire, but also to have a meaningful life in Him, that is not carnal but spiritual (Romans 8:1).
The “Good” LORD Jesus knows the thoughts that He is thinking toward us, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give us a Hope (1 Timothy 1:1) or an expected end or a future (Jeremiah 29:11).
A Christian life should be a life in progress, not in regress, deterioration or return to the previous sinful state.
Getting people saved while here on earth is not the end point of the Lord Jesus’ work, but continues further in our life transformation from glory to glory, while Jesus molds-fashions-shapes us into His character as He enables our minds to be renewed gradually, since we no longer conform to the ways of this sinful world.
The humankind or mankind is sinful from birth. In fact, even during conception (when the fertilized egg or zygote is implanted on the womb or uterus), we are already sinful (Psalm 51:5).
Mankind (we) are in need of the “Good” Lord Jesus Christ to be saved from condemnation, by taking Him in His fullness, because we have come to trust or believe in His name (John 1:12), in order to be born again.
Making people disciples or followers of the Lord Jesus Christ flies or starts out from there.
