Abstract: The concept or idea regarding the meaning of the word or term “one”, as rendered-conveyed-imparted-given in the Bible or even in any other literary and/or grammatical material, may have no less than three denotations, connotations or meanings.
The concept of the word “one”:
1. Numerically one– single or singular in number; the literal one;
e.g.s- a. Wherefore as by one man, sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned (Romans 5:12). Here, the one man being referred to is the 1st man- Adam. He, being the racial head of the humankind (i.e., punong pinanggalingan ng lahi ng uring tao), from whose rib Eve was merely derived (Genesis 2:22-23), was rendered/made liable by the Good Lord Jesus Christ, of having committed the sin, which his wife Eve, had initially started or initiated.
Thus, this one man Adam, had been held accountable by Jesus, for the sin which his wife Eve had first committed, by virtue or on the ground of being the racial head of mankind, in the same manner that husbands ought to be the heads of their wives and families, defending them from any harm or trouble. Had Adam been present and available while Eve was being tempted by Satan (i.e., in serpentine form), it is highly likely that Eve would not have fallen into sin, and persuade Adam to do the same.
By one (i.e., single or singular or numerically one or literally one) man Adam, all Adam- derived humankind were made sinners (Psalm 51:5), all in need of a Savior (Luke 1:46-47); b. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness, considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted (Galatians 6:1).
2. One in purpose-aim-goal or objective/view or insight/perception (but “numerically plural” or “plural in number”)– in agreement, united, mutual-in tandem-together-as a pair, joint/combined, shared, reciprocal, give and take, harmonious, in accord, agreed &/or reconciled, similar-analogous-alike-identical-the same;
e.g.s- a. But now in Christ Jesus, ye who sometimes were far off, are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For He is our peace, who hath made “both” one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us (Ephesians 2:13-14). The word “both” implies/means and involves two entities/parties, while the word one here implies/means agreed, united, combined, harmonious, in accord and reconciled.
Through the precious blood of God the Son (Hebrews 1:8) Incarnate (John 1:1, 14; Acts 20:28; I Timothy 3:16; Colossians 2:9; I John 4:1-3; 3:16; John 10:11, 15, 17-18; Philippians 2:7-8), He (i.e., Christ Jesus) has reconciled us to God or the Godkind, He being our Yahweh or Jehovah Shalom (i.e., the LORD who is our Peace); b. But when “they” knew that he was a Jew, “all” with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, great is Diana of the Ephesians (Acts 19:34). The words “they” and “all” indicate plurality of the people who shouted for 2 hours. One voice here cannot be “literally one” or “numerically one” or “single/singular in number”.
Instead, one voice here implied/meant they shouted in unison, agreement, harmony, accord, unity, union, unanimity and concord, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians.” c. I have planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then, neither is he that planteth anything, neither he that watereth, but God that giveth the increase. Now, he that planteth and he that watereth are one, and every man shall receive his own reward, according to his own labour (I Corinthians 3:6-8). Here, there are 2 parties-entities-persons-individuals-selves involved, one is the Apostle Paul, and another is Apollos. According to the verse, the two (i.e., they) are one.
The one who sows the plants is different from the one who waters it, but the two have a common purpose-aim-goal or objective, which is to further-advance-promote-expand the kingdom of God, or to work in Christ’s vineyard. By virtue of working for Jesus in agreement, harmony, unity, tandem, togetherness, partnership, teamwork and accord, Paul and Apollos are said to be one; d. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall “cleave” unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh (Genesis 2:24). To “cleave” is to adhere or unite.
The Lord Jesus Christ taught in the scriptures, how a man ought to leave his parents, and cleave or adhere or unite to his wife in the bond-tie-link-connection of matrimony-wedlock-marriage. The married/wedded couple cannot be “literally one” or “numerically one” or “one in number” or “single/singular in number”. One flesh in the above verse simply implies-denotes-connotes-means-insinuates-indicates unity or union within and among the wedded pair or couple.
Thus, the wedded pair ought to be mutual, harmonious and in accord; e. And said, for this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall “cleave” to his wife, and they “twain”/“two” shall be one flesh. Wherefore, they are no more “twain” but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder/apart (Matthew 19:5-6; Mark 10:7-9). When a man is not yet married, we call the same “single”. Physical-wise or flesh-wise, he is “single or singular in number”. He is “numerically one” or “literally one” flesh. Same is true for an unmarried woman. She is “single”. Physical-wise or flesh-wise, she is “single or singular in number”. She is “numerically one” or “literally one” flesh. If you add up or count one (i.e., singular) man plus one (i.e., singular) woman, you will come up with twain or two fleshes.
However, if you get to unite the pair in wedlock or married state, Jesus no longer considers them twain or two, but one (i.e., united, harmonious, mutual, joint/combined, shared ) flesh. Therefore, what Jesus had joined together, combined, united, unified, fused and merged, let no man separate; f. And now, I am no more in the world, but “these” are in the world and I come to Thee. Holy Father, keep through Thine own name “those” whom Thou hast given me, that “they” may be one, as “We are” (John 17:11). In this scene-scenario-spectacle-milieu, Jesus was about to be crucified already, and He is prophetically declaring that His tangible-touchable-palpable physical presence is about to leave the world already (i.e., soon), to return to God the Father, and be seated at the right hand of the throne of God the Father (Hebrews 12:2), after accomplishing His task of saving the world, conditionally (John 3:15).
Also, He is praying to God the Father, that the Same (by means of His own name) would keep or protect all of them, who have believed in Jesus Christ, that they may be one (i.e., united, harmonious, in agreement, mutual), even as God the Father and Christ Jesus are one (i.e., united, harmonious, agreed, mutual); g. Neither pray I for “these” alone, but for “them” also which shall believe on Me through “their” word. That “they all” may be one, as Thou Father art in Me, and I in Thee, that “they” also may be one in “Us” that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me. And the glory which Thou gavest Me, I have given “them”, that “they” may be one, even as “we are” one (John 17:20-22).
Here, Jesus is praying to God the Father, not only for the saved, but also for those who will get saved, that “they all” may be one (i.e., united, harmonious, agreed, mutual, together), as God the Father and God the Son- Christ Jesus, are mutually indwelling each other, and closely knitted or together, so that the saved and will get saved, may be one (i.e., united, harmonious, agreed, mutual, together) in Both the Godkind Father and the Godkind Son, Both of which are distinct, and 2 different/varied, but non-interchangeable Persons-Individuals-Selves-Personalities.
God the Father is the Sender, while God the Son- Christ Jesus is the Sent One. The same glory-honor-splendor which God the Father has given to God the Son- Christ Jesus, is the same glory-honor-splendor which Jesus has given to His followers/adherents, so that they may be one (i.e., united, harmonious, agreed, mutual, together, cooperative, collaborative), even as both God the Father and God the Son “are” one (i.e., united, harmonious, agreed, mutual, together, cooperative, collaborative); h. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the Water, and the Blood, and these three agree in one (I John 5:8).
The Spirit referred to here is God the Father (John 4:23-24). The Water being referred here is God the Holy Spirit (John 4:10; 7:38-39), while the Blood referred here is God the Son Incarnate- the Lord Jesus Christ (Hebrews 9:22; Revelation 13:8; Isaiah 53:5; Acts 20:28); i. Genesis 41:1-32 tell us the story of Pharaoh’s 2 dreams which none of his magicians and wise men were able to interpret. But the Hebrew youth named Joseph, was mentioned to be capable of interpreting dreams. Thus, his presence was sought after/for by Pharaoh to have his dreams interpreted by Joseph. He told Joseph that in his dreams he initially dreamed about 7 kine-cows-cattle that are well favored and fat fleshed-stout-robust-full bodied, sleek or healthy looking, coming up from the Nile River, into the bank or brink to graze (i.e., eat grass) by the meadow or pasture.
Subsequently, another group of 7 kine, ill-favored and lean-fleshed, gaunt/scrawny (i.e., very thin, pale and weak-looking) or emaciated (i.e., extremely thin) came up from the same river, and this latter group of kine-cows-cattle devoured or consumed or swallowed the former group of kine, so that the latter group still appears emaciated, ill-favored and lean-fleshed. Then Pharaoh told Joseph of his other dream. He informed Joseph that in his 2nd dream, he saw 7 ears of corn that are plump (i.e., round and full), growing up from one stalk.
Furthermore, he saw another group of 7 ears of corn, but they are blighted-destroyed-devastated, scorched and withered by the east wind. In the same manner, the 7 blighted ears of corn devoured-consumed-swallowed the 7 ears of corn that are plump, but the blighted ears of corn didn’t seem to have consumed the plump ears of corn at all. They still remained and appeared blighted-destroyed-devastated and scorched/withered. Hearing the 2 dreams, Joseph replied to Pharaoh by saying, “The dream is one,” or “The dreams are one.” These cannot be a “literally one” dream, a “numerically one” dream, or a “numerically single/singular” dream.
The dream is one or the dreams are one only in the sense that the 2 dreams which Pharaoh had, have a common/similar or an analogous/alike and the same meaning. So, Joseph gave the meanings of the 2 dreams: The 7 well favored kine/cows and the 7 plump ears of corn are the 7 initial plenteous/bountiful/abundant/prosperous years which Egypt will have, while the 7 ill favored kine/cows and the 7 blighted ears of corn are the 7 succeeding/subsequent years of famine-scarcity-dearth-drought that will come about in the land of Egypt and Canaan, so that the 7 initial plenteous years will not be brought to remembrance; j. If I remembered and heard it right, several years ago, Lea Salonga popularized a song with somewhat these lines: Come, young citizens of the world. We are one. We are one. We have one voice. We have one dream and with one song we sing: Peace, prosperity, and love for all mankind.
“We are one,” “we are one” cannot be referring to “singleness/singularity in number”, “numerical one” or “the literal one” concerning the people being referred to, since not only are the personal pronouns “we” used in the plural form, but also because the said pronouns pertain to the young citizens of the world, which are more than one or plural in number. Instead, “we are one” in this context may connote-denote-imply-mean agreement, unity/union, mutuality, togetherness, harmony, accord, reconciliation and similarity or sameness. “We have one voice” can’t also mean a voice that is “single/singular in number”, “numerically one” or “the literal one”, since the young citizens of the world are plural in number, thereby creating-conveying-imparting multiple voices, that are in essence-substance-effect, harmonious, agreed, united, mutual, together, in accord, reconciled and similar or the same in their advocacy/cies.
If peace, prosperity and love for all mankind refer to “the one dream that we have” and “the one song that we sing”, then “one dream” here can’t also be a dream that is “single/singular in number”, “numerically one” or “the literal one”, considering the fact that peace, prosperity and love for all mankind are 3 items or entities. Instead, “we have one dream” may mean we have similar or the same dream. In the same manner, “with one song we sing” may also mean we have a similar or the same song to sing.
A song cannot be “single/singular in number”, “numerically one” or “literally one” when the singers are many or plural in number. Can there be agreement, unity/union, mutuality-togetherness-pairing, combination, sharing, reciprocity, give and take relationship, harmony, accord, reconciliation, similarity-analogy-alikeness-comparison when oneness (i.e., kaisahan/pagka-isa) is by virtue of “singleness or singularity in number”, being “numerically one” or “the literal one?”
How can there be agreement, unity/union, mutuality-togetherness-pairing, combination, sharing, reciprocity, give and take relationship, harmony, accord, reconciliation, similarity-analogy-alikeness-comparison in a single or singular entity/item? Unity/union or agreement for instance requires at least 2 entities, not less!!!
3. One in kind (but “numerically plural” or “plural in number”)– one in class, echelon-rank-level, sort, category, nature, essence, type, genus, genre;
e.g.s- a. On a certain occasion in the Bible, Jesus was having a discourse-dialogue-conversation-discussion-communication-chat with the Jews. In that instance, Jesus said, “I and My Father are one.” Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. Jesus said unto them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?” The Jews answered Jesus, “For a good work we stone Thee not, but for blasphemy (i.e., ridicule-insult-scorn of God), and because that Thou, being a man, makes Thyself God (John 10:30-33).”
As is clearly mentioned here, the Jews’ bone of contention (i.e., issue-disagreement-dispute) with Jesus is not about His good works, but rather, His claim or declaration-proclamation that He and God the Father are one. What does He mean by that? Why were the Jews so enraged by that claim of Jesus? Answer: Simply because, for them, Jesus’ claim that He and God the Father are one means not only is Christ Jesus professing to be God, but He is also equating Himself to/with God the Father (John 5:18; Philippians 2:5-6), thereby making and/or proving Himself to be God (John 20:28; 1:1; Titus 2:13; Hebrews 1:8).
In substance-essence-effect, the Mighty (Isaiah 9:6; Job 36:5) and the Almighty (Revelation 1:7-8; 22:12-13, 20) “Good” (Matthew 19:17; Mark 10:18; Luke 18:19) Lord (Philippians 2:9-11; Matthew 4:10; Colossians 3:23-24; II Corinthians 10:5) God the Son (Hebrews 1:8; Romans 8:3, 32), Jesus- the Christ (Hebrews 13:8), Incarnate (John 1:1, 14; Acts 20:28; I John 4:1-3; I Timothy 3:16; Colossians 2:9), Perfect Man (II Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 4:14-15) and All in all (Colossians 3:11b) is “one in kind” with God the Father (and with God the Holy Spirit–Acts 5:1-4).
God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit belong to the same class, rank, category, nature, essence, type, genre, genus, kind (i.e., God), yet These 3 distinct, different and varied Persons, Individuals, Selves have fixed identities that are non- interchangeable. The 3 are “plural in number” or “numerically plural”, or “plural in headcount” but They are one (i.e., singular) in kind (i.e., Godkind). Note: I didn’t say “singular in number.” I said, “singular in kind.” b. For there are 3 that bear record in heaven- the Father (i.e., God the Father), the Word (i.e., God the Son- Christ Jesus; John 1:1; Hebrews 4:12-13) and the Holy Ghost (i.e., God the Holy Spirit–Acts 5:1-4): and These 3 are one (I John 5:7).
For instance, take the 3 different and varied drug brands: 1. Aeknil; 2. Biogesic; and 3. Calpol; these are 3 items/entities distinct from each other, yet they belong to the single and the same genre-genus-kind of drug or drugkind, which is Paracetamol. Another example is 3 of my nephews: 1. Clarence James; 2. Mark Johndel; and 3. Gerald Joshua; they are 3 distinct, different and varied persons-individuals-selves, with fixed identities that are non-interchangeable, yet they belong to one (i.e., a single and the same) genre-genus-kind (i.e., human). My 3 nephews belong to a single and the same kind (i.e., the humankind). Supposed I have 3 dogs, named as follows: a. Bantay 1; b. Bantay 2; and c. Bantay 3; these are 3 distinct, different and varied dogs, with fixed identities that are non-interchangeable, yet they belong to one genre-genus-kind (i.e., the animalkind).
Supposed I own 3 apes for pets, these are 3 distinct, different and varied entities with fixed identities that are non-interchangeable, yet belonging to one (i.e., a single and the same) genre/genus/kind (i.e., the animalkind). When the “Good” LORD Jesus Christ originally created the 3 distinct, different and varied persons/individuals/selves- Michael, Gabriel and Lucifer (later turned Satan or enemy), the 3 of them have fixed identities that are non-interchangeable. Yes, they are “numerically plural”, “plural in number” or “plural in headcount”, but co-equally belonging to one (i.e., a single and the same) genre/genus/kind (i.e., chief or arch angelkind).
Lastly, let us consider the 3 items or entities- carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. They are “numerically plural” or “plural in number”. They have fixed individual or separate identities that are non-interchangeable within and among them, giving them distinction-difference-variation from each other, yet the 3 of them belong to one (i.e., a single and the same) genre-genus-kind (i.e., the elementalkind, as those seen in the periodic table).
With the 3 concepts of the word “one” well-considered, we can now venture in studying the concept of the Trinity or the Trinitarian concept.
